Our mission
Codes d’accès is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion and professionalization of emerging Quebec new music artists (contemporary classical, electroacoustic and experimental). The organization fulfills its mission by producing and presenting innovative concerts of the highest quality and artistic interpretation, representative of the diversity of trends and practices in Quebec’s new music scene.
In order to represent up-and-coming artists as adequately and fairly as possible, programmed artists are selected through a semi-annual call for projects. The selection is made by a committee of peers and the artistic director, enabling emerging artists to make their presence felt in the community. From the submission of an artistic project to its dissemination and production, Codes d’accès provides artists with a rewarding professional experience through material, financial and human support.
Based in Montreal, Codes d’accès is a key player on the new music scene, for emerging artists and audiences alike. The values of inclusion and openness are fundamental to the organization. The organization aims for sharing, collaboration and exchange between artists, audiences and the artistic community as a whole, with a view to building and embodying a plural, effervescent and supportive community.
Our role
Codes d’accès has played an important role in the early careers of many of today’s highly acclaimed artists, including Keiko Devaux, James O’Callaghan, Ensemble Paramirabo, ECM+, Tim Brady, Gabriel Dharmoo, Sarah Albu, Serge Arcuri, Jimmie Leblanc, Ensemble Arkea (Dina Gilbert), Pentaèdre, Quasar and Marie-Annick Béliveau.
Codes d’accès has always allied itself with select partners to further its mission and promote its artists throughout Quebec and beyond. In recent years, Codes d’accès has collaborated with Groupe Le Vivier, Laboratoire de musique contemporaine de Montréal, Centre PRIM, MAC, Suoni per il Popolo Festival, Nouvel Ensemble Moderne (NEM) and Thin Edge New Music Collective.
In recent years, Codes d’accès has received a large number of submissions for interdisciplinary projects, bringing music into dialogue with theater, dance, technology and video art. Attentive to emerging artists and current trends, Codes d’accès chooses to select projects involving various disciplines based on the quality of the artistic approach and experimentation, while ensuring that music prevails throughout its programming.
Our history
1985
Codes d’accès was founded in 1985 by a group of emerging musicians (Céline Asselin, Ghyslaine Dubuc, Mario Gauthier, André Hamel, Claude Lassonde, Johanne Lassonde, Gaétan Martel, Lise Millet, Francis Ouellet and Gilles Plante) with the aim of promoting the interests of Quebec’s contemporary music performers and composers, and informing the public about the various trends in this field. Having served as directors and board members for nearly 10 years, the founding members are handing over their positions to the next generation of artists and cultural managers.
2005
The Artistic Committee (CArt) is created to support general management in the creation of annual programming. In 2015, for the organization’s 30th anniversary, Codes d’accès welcomes its first artistic director, Marc-Olivier Lamontagne.
2014
Codes d’accès won the Opus Concert of the Year – Musique électroacoustique et actuelle award for Bad Trip! and was nominated for the À court de mots concert. In 2009, the organization was nominated for the 2×4 II concert.
.
2021
Codes d’accès created the Glitch Lab, a community project designed to introduce young people to digital music creation (partners: Hoodstock and DOD Basketball).
