Call for projects

Codes d’accès launches its Call for projects for emerging artists to discover innovative proposals for musical performance or sound art in the field of new and experimental music. Through its activities, the organization gives a voice to a new generation of emerging musicians, enabling them to realize their most audacious projects.

Codes d’accès is open to any musical form whose artistic approach demonstrates an element of reflection on the discipline, on creation or on contemporary issues. Regardless of the nature of the project, candidates are strongly encouraged to demonstrate originality and to present content and/or form that are significant in terms of our contemporary world.

Selected projects will receive :

  • artists’ honorariums (according to Access Code standards)
  • concert hall production and equipment/staff available on site
  • promotion (social networks, website, newsletter)
  • artist support
  • support in raising additional funds

ELIGIBILITY

  • emerging artists
  • individual artists, ensembles, collectives
  • artists currently residing in the province of Quebec (participating artists other than the artist submitting the project may reside elsewhere, but local artists will be given priority)
  • performance of works (repertoire or creation)
  • concert project (repertoire or creation)
  • multidisciplinary performance in which music or sound play a leading role (NB: in keeping with Codes d’accès’s mission, the organization will fund the fees of musicians and composers only).
  • *selected projects may be offered partial or combined presentation with other projects at a concert
  • album production
  • concert recording
  • commissioned works (Codes d’accès issues its own calls for commissioned works. World premiere creations are welcome and are subject to a special fee)
  • rental of rehearsal rooms or equipment
  • creative or technical residencies
  • expenses for a project already supported by another presenter or producer

CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR THE PRIM RESIDENCY

PRIM and Codes d’accès have teamed up to offer an exceptional opportunity for an emerging audio artist to produce a Surround work for distribution with Codes d’accès. With a focus on finishing, mixing and mastering, the selected artist will be able to finalize his or her project in PRIM’s sound laboratory, and benefit from distribution as part of Codes d’accès’s regular programming.

ELIGIBILITY


– Artist, musician, composer, performer, representative of an ensemble, organization or artists collective;
– Emerging artist (see definition below)
– Canadian citizen or permanent resident. If a collective, at least one member should be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident.

PRIM and Codes d’accès invite emerging, mid-career and established artists to submit a project. Supporting diversity and inclusion, PRIM and Codes d’accès encourage submissions from self-identified minority artists.

In keeping with Codes d’accès’s mandate, artists with less than ten (10) years of active professional life will be given preference in the selection process, regardless of age. The date of commencement of active professional life is generally determined by the first participation in an event produced by a recognized organization in a recognized venue, or by the completion of studies in the arts. However, the level of experience, the frequency of professional activities and past experience with the organization are factors that could influence the jury’s decision, based on the organization’s mandate to cultivate first professional experiences.

  • 10 working sessions in PRIM’s sound laboratory

  • Listening session at the end of the residency

By Codes d’accès

  • Diffusion ou codiffusion of the work in the next season
  • Professional support as provided to the regular Codes d’accès’ artists

Residency dates

Work sessions at PRIM should take place between January and July 2024, and last a maximum of 1 month. The date of distribution by Access Codes will be determined according to the nature of the work and its completion date.

General eligibility rules

Only one application per contest and per artist is eligible. There is no limit to the number of times a project may be submitted in the event of rejection in a previous competition.

Eligible projects

All proposals for productions of electroacoustic new music are eligible.

By new music, Codes d’accès means any musical form whose artistic approach reflects on the discipline, on creation or on contemporary issues. Regardless of the nature of the project, applicants are strongly encouraged to demonstrate originality, develop a personal mode of expression, and present content and/or form that are meaningful in terms of our contemporary world.

By electroacoustic work, Codes d’accès means any musical form using the loudspeaker as a means of diffusion, and created with the aid of electronic tools.

The duration of the final work broadcast by Codes d’accès may not exceed 30 minutes.

Note: Projects that are part of a school curriculum are not eligible.

  • Technicians’ honorariums
  • ‘Fournitures et supports de diffusion’ 
  • Traveling and accommodation expenses

Evaluation process

Applications are first evaluated by the person in charge of the program at Codes d’accès, according to the program’s eligibility requirements.
Eligible applications are then evaluated by the CArt (Codes d’accès Artistic Committee), while a PRIM representative validates project feasibility.

The committee evaluates the applications on the basis of the program’s assessment criteria. At the end of the evaluation, the committee members decide whether or not to grant a residency. Decisions are final and cannot be appealed.

Evaluation criteria

Projects are evaluated according to the following criteria:

Artistic merit (50%)

  1. Artistic quality of the examples provided
  2. Artistic relevance of the project and its approach
  3. Value of intended results
  4. Risk-taking

Impact (30 %)

  1. Positive impact on candidates’ careers
  2. Impact on the milieu and artistic practice
  3. Impact of Codes d’accès and PRIM assistance in project realization
  4. Alignment with Codes d’accès and PRIM mandates
  5. Likelihood of arousing public interest

Faisabilité du projet (20%)

  1. Candidate’s ability to bring the project to fruition
  2. Realism of project objectives and resources

In order to benefit from the PRIM | Codes d’accès Residency, recipients must become members of PRIM ($75) and Codes d’accès ($10), carry out their project within one year of the date of signature of the agreement and respect its terms and conditions.

CALL FOR ENTRIES FOR COMPOSITION COMMISSION

Musical composition for dance

Codes d’accès and Espace ouvert are launching their first collaboration, inviting composers and sound artists to apply to write the soundtrack for a dance piece in collaboration with a dance or movement artist from the 2024-2025 BigBang cohort.

ELIGIBILITY

  • the composition will be created in collaboration with the assigned dancer and must be based on their choreography
  • the creation period will take place between March and June 2025
  • selected artists commit to a minimum of one bi-weekly meeting with their collaborator during the creation period
  • selected artists agree to attend mentoring sessions offered by Codes d’accès
  • electronic music
  • 10-15 minutes, depending on dancers’ needs
  • the collaborative work will be presented by Espace Ouvert at the end of the BigBang session
  • fee: $2,000 (including final presentation fee)
  • February: selection of composers
  • March 3: start of BigBang program, meeting with movement/dance artist

  1. The call is open to all artists currently residing in Quebec;
  2. According to the mandate of Codes d’accès, artists with less than 10 years of active professional life will be given preference in the selection process, regardless of age. However, the level of experience, frequency of professional activities and past experience with the organization are factors that may influence the jury’s decision, depending on the organization’s mandate;
  3. The artistic committee meets twice a year to evaluate the applications received by the deadlines;
  4. A single applicant may submit only one project per call;
  5. Members of the Codes d’accès Board of Directors and Artistic Committee may not submit an application, nor participate in the realization of a project submitted during their term of office;
  6. Decisions made by Codes d’accès and its partners at the end of the evaluation process are final and without appeal;
  7. By applying, you automatically accept the above terms and conditions.

Applications will be assessed by Codes d’accès’s artistic committee (CArT) according to the following criteria.
